History of Jubilee

home

The first Chesapeake Jubilee was held in 1983 in observance of the city's 20th anniversary. The idea originated during a Chamber of Commerce planning session in 1981. Subsequently, the City Council endorsed the Jubilee, and it has become the biggest yearly event for the city. The Jubilee was held on the grounds of Greenbrier Mall for the first three years and in 1986 it was moved to its present location on Greenbrier Parkway.

The major objective is to celebrate the city's anniversary and highlight its growth and development. The Jubilee also places great emphasis on wholesome entertainment that can be enjoyed by every family member. Other goals include: Building community spirit and cohesiveness by involving Chesapeake citizens in their celebrations, and by offering events that appeal to a cross-section of the community, both geographically and culturally. Another goal is to create an awareness of Chesapeake as a major city in the Hampton Roads area, and to attract our neighbors in surrounding cities to visit and share in our celebration.
